1968年紐約大學的歐特曼教授(Edward I. Altman)於The Journal of Finance發表一篇論文( Financial Ratio , Discriminant Analysis and the Prediction of Corporate Bankruptcy )，該文以Z-Score模型，將66個公司樣本分類為二群(各33家公司)，檢測Z-Score模型對於公司破產與不破產的預測能力，其結果顯示Z-Score模型的精確度分別達到94%與97%。
